After A Fire


If your house is Insured:

Home Owners

  • Notify your insurance company immediately

  • As much as possible, leave items untampered until insurance adjuster arrives

  • After adjuster has completed, sort out the undamaged  item.   DO NOT discard anything until your insurance adjuster advises you to do so.

  • Photograph all the damage inside and outside your house.

  • Keep all reciepts for lodging and other expenses.

  • Create and inventory of all missing and damaged items.

  • Consult your insurance company before contracting any estimates for repairs.

Tenants

  • Contact the manager or owner of the building.  The owner must contact the insurance company and protect the building.

  • If you have renter insurance contact your insurance company immediately

  • Do whatever is necessary to protect your belongings from further damage or theft.

Temporary Relocation

  • If your house dangerous of unlivable it may be necessary for you to relocate for temorary housing.

  • Secure house from vandalism or theft

  • Bring these items with you

    • Eyeglasses

    • Credit Cards Checkbooks

    • Essential Medications

    • Insurance Policies

    • Money

    • Jewelry

    • Identification

  • Give your temorary address to:

    • Insurance Agent

    • Mortgage Company

    • Employer

    • Schools

    • Family and Friends

    • Neighbors

Personal Recovery

Taking control of the claenup, recovery, and reconstruction can be part of the healing process after a house fire. Becoming activly involved in the fire prevention may help you heal faster, and help you avoid future fires.
